Actress Vidya Balan is learning a different language to play a wicked vamp from Uttar Pradesh in Ishqiya .
The movie, being produced by Vishal Bharadwaj and directed by his assistant Abhishek Chaubey, tells the story of a scheming con-woman who double times an uncle-nephew duo. While Vidya plays the con-woman, Naseeruddin Shah and Arshad Warsi play the uncle-nephew duo.
To get into the skin of her character, Vidya has been learning some local UP dialects under the guidance of an instructor named Vikas Kumar.
Mind it! Vikas isn’t teaching Vidya any finesse of Avadhi or Bhojpuri, but he is teaching her a vernacular mix of local dialects that are spoken in and around Gorakhpur, where the film’s story is set.
Since Vidya has a South Indian background, she has been slogging to get the UP accent right.
It may be recalled that Vishal Bharadwaj made Saif Ali Khan learn the UP dialect (including the expletives) for his movie Omkara . And now, in ‘Ishqiya’, Vishal’s acolyte Abhishek is following his mentor’s example.
